Bluegrass Chapter Meeting

Meeting Title: September 2017 Chapter Meeting
Meeting Details:

Designing for Energy Security (1.0 PDHs)

Rob McAtee, PE, CEM, LEED AP BD+C. Director of Energy and Sustainability Services, Mason & Hanger (a Day & Zimmermann Company)

With the alarming increase in threats ranging from cyber-attacks to extreme weather events more advanced thinking is needed to determine how best to power our installations and plan for disruptions in utility services. Simply sprinkling a few diesel generators around to back-up key buildings isn’t good enough anymore.

A comprehensive energy plan is required to ensure continuity of mission readiness. Such an approach must evaluate a variety of sometimes contradictory requirements to arrive at the most resilient total energy solutions.  Done correctly, designing for such resiliency also improves the overall efficiency of an installation’s generation systems and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

This session will explore projects and processes that mitigate security challenges including physical attack, flooding, and hacking of control systems.

The session will provide case studies showing completed projects and the benefits of on-site generation and microgrids to improve energy security, reduce energy costs, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

  • To understand the current and anticipated threats to our nation’s energy infrastructure.
  • To develop a systematic approach to mitigating security threats at your facility.
  • To learn about the benefits of distributed generation to energy security.
  • To embrace energy efficiency and renewable energy as avenues for increasing the mission-readiness of an installation.
